The first professional book to approach problems, accidents and pathologies in foundations just got a new edition. Unpublished images and illustrations, detailed cases and recommendations of good practice for each constructive sector were included in the updated chapters of Foundations pathology 2nd edition.
Besides the content complement this version considers the standard NBR 6122/2010 from Brazilian Association of Technical Standard (ABNT) about foundations and also the most recent Brazilian Association of Foundations and Geotechnics Engineering Companies (ABEF) Manual. Information and references are technically based and the authors worried in detailing the innovations of the last 10 years in the market: new equipment for foundations execution; availability expansion of subsoil investigation and stilt tests; and new problems associated to designs’ nature. This important reference is even much more complete and contributes for professionals in the field to predict and overcome challenges related to foundations.

Jarbas Milititsky has a Masters in Soil Mechanics by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and a Doctorate in the same field by University of Surrey. Currently is Director in Milititsky Consultoria Geotécnica and vice president for Latin America of International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

Nilo Cesar Consoli
Nilo Cesar Consoli is graduated in Civil Engineering by Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), has a Masters in Civil Engineering by Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), a Doctorate in Civil Engineering by Concordia University in Canada and a post-doctorate by the University of Western Australia. Current is a professor in the Civil Engineering Department and researcher of the graduate program in UFRGS has experience in Geotechnics and Environment - Sustainability.
Fernando Schnaid is graduated in Civil Engineering by Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), has a Masters in Civil Engineering by Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), a Doctorate in Engineering Science by University of Oxford and a post-doctorate by the University of Western Australia. Current is a professor in UFRGS. Has experience in Geotechnics acting mainly in soil-structure interaction, geotechnic investigation and geo-materials behaviour.

Preface to the 2nd edition
The first edition of this book, in 2006, was well received by professionals of the field, filling an area deprived of comprehensive and updated technical material of Brazilian engineering praxis. In the several authors’ participations in technic events there were countless positive manifestations about the book’s contribution for the professional practice, no mentioning the courses and training requested by companies and professional entities.
After the first edition’s release we received a great number of comments and contributions with informations and photos of accidents presented in this general revision. Our special thanks to the colleagues Augusto Tozzi, Plínio Boldo, Claudio Gonçalves, George Bernardes, Luis Fernando de Seixas Neves, Edgar Odebrecht, Wilson Borges and Sérgio Paraíso, who provided special contribution so the pathologies problems were illustrated richly and instructively.
The update were necessary for infinite reasons, which we can mention the new edition of NBR 6122/2010 standard by Brazilian Association of Technical Standard (ABNT), of Foundations, demanding tests in deep foundations, the new edition of the Brazilian Association of Foundations and Geotechnics Engineering Companies (ABEF) Manual, Brazilian market innovations with new equipment for foundations execution, availability expansion of subsoil investigation and stilt tests, and authors with access to new problems (design nature). In this period also occurred a knowledge evolution, with cases publication, procedures and praxis in technical literature available by the new digital promotion medias (internet search, online publications etc.).
In the lectures conducted by the authors occurred the enlargement of the content purpose by presenting challenges for improvement of each of the presented aspects besides the recommendations of good practice, which inclusion constitutes an innovation in this edition. The end of each chapter presents indications of the recommended praxis for sectorial evolution and minimization of inherent pathologies risks to the area of activity and foundations nature and its praxis.
