About the authors

Shigenori Maruyama

Shigenori Maruyama was born in 1949 in the Province of Tokushima, Japan. After graduating from Tokyo University, he studied at the University of Kanazawa and Nagoya. In 1993, he became a professor in graduate scientific research courses at the Technological University of Tokyo. He´s received several awards, including the Medal of Honor from the Government of Japan for major contribution in the field of geology.

Has international politics ever received such a compelling message from scientists? That´s what it is in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), and the opening editorial of the newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Japan, on 24/11/2007, whose title reads "Stop Global Warming: a message from scientists to politicians."
In 2007, IPCC published three reports of sectoral meetings on global warming, the report basis for integration of November, in which the warnings appear to control the heating, and the measures to be taken in the next 20-30 years by different countries worldwide. Scientists ten represented the collective will of humanity, for human activities had reached the limits of sustainability, thus politicians would have to do something too. Among the practical measures, needless to say, is the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
At the Heiligendamm Summit held in 2007, the then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe proposed to representatives of different countries the goal of halving carbon dioxide emissions, which plays the villain in global warming, and admits no doubt or dispute about it. In such scenario it is abundant the use of compound words with the prefix "eco" (from the Greek oikos = house, or who is a friend of the planet Earth). Sometimes it seems a religion.
The combat against global warming is a task of utmost importance and urgency, as well as the reduction of carbon dioxide emitted because the increase on the Earth´s average temperature is an indisputable fact. But will global warming continue? Is carbon dioxide the real villain here? No one can answer these questions with certainty, whether a layman or a scientist, nothing can be proved.
Climate change is caused, among other factors, by the activities of the Sun and cosmic rays intensity; therefore, the rise in temperature in the last 20 years can also be attributed to increased solar activity, a fact which is hardly known. Thus, I believe that discussions surrounding the main factors that cause global warming should not be restricted to the sun or to carbon dioxide. And what if the problem is neither? What if there´s a third factor, connected to clouds caused by the intensity of cosmic rays?
Cutting-edge research experts should focus on technical environmental control that determines the cloudiness caused by cosmic rays, quantify it, and monitor it continuously with the use of artificial satellites. To make it simple: it is known that the influence of clouds on temperature is much higher than greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide.
It seems that after all the mistakes made, society is unwilling to correct its own path, and has chosen carbon dioxide as the one great villain of global warming.
Science has joined politics and has come to suggest important actions to be taken for the future of the Earth and the environment, but the focus is exclusively on heating, in detriment of other really fearful problems, such as lack of food and other resources, as the result of the increase in population - the " 2020 crisis"
I know that water pollution and air represents an extremely worrying problem, but while the content of carbon dioxide undergoes an increase of 1 ppm/year, which causes a temperature increase of about 0.004 ° C, the increase in world population is of 80 million per year.
Hence, I decided to write this book: to warn humanity that we should put out intelligence to work and our financial resources to solve the problem of food shortages, instead of performing the "dance of global warming and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions." The race for food is not an issue that allows delays because it will be a reality by 2020, contrary to global warming.
As a geologist, I have researched the long trajectory of the Sun, the Earth and other planets, and I have analyzed the material of the formations (rocks), which reveal past environmental changes, such as those related to the atmosphere, cosmic rays, the evolution of life and air and water pollution. The knowledge about the past and the understanding of the fundamental principles, enable the prediction of the future. Once we know the causes of warming, we can predict the climate in the future just to an extent.
Therefore, in considering the results of my research to date and with the help of the latest tools available, I´ve been able to pull a list of the most threatening and eminent dangers.

Shigenori Maruyama
