Prestressed Concrete: theory and practice

This book aims to introduce the fundamental sizing and verification concepts of prestressed concrete structures. The text covers the program of graduation courses and also includes a brief revision of items from pre-required subjects, such as General Mechanics, Strength of Materials and Reinforced Concrete.

The theory presented is based on the recommendation of the Norma NBR 6118 (Project of Prestressed Concrete Structures), complemented with numerical applications of examples taken from professional practice.

The book covers, in six chapters, the following subjects:

  1. Materials, concepts and operation principles of prestressing;
  2. Comparative study between pieces of reinforced and prestressed concrete, types of prestressing as to the building processes and the demands relative to cracking, methods of Limits States and security in structures;
  3. Verification and sizing of the prestressed concrete cross sections;
  4. Sum of prestressing losses;
  5. Revision of concepts and perquisites, [macroscript?] for projects of prestressed concrete structures and geometrical layout of cables;
  6. Solved exercises.

This book may be used as didactic material in graduation and specialization courses and by professionals who work in the field of Projects and Execution of Prestressed Concrete Structures.

About the authors

Luiz Cholfe

Luiz Cholfe is a civil engineer by the School of Engineering of Mackenzie Presbyterian University – EEUPM (1971) and Master in Structural Engineering by the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (1986). He’s been a professor of the EEUPM’s Department of Structures since 1974 and is responsible for the Prestressed Concrete discipline. He’s associate-founder and acting director of Statura Engenharia e Projetos Ltda. (1975), a consultant and structural projects company (reinforced/prestressed concrete and metallic), with over 1.800 projects implanted in Brazilian territory. He’s a member of the Brazilian Association of Engineering and Structural Consulting (Abece) and of the Brazilian Concrete Institute (Ibracon).

Luciana Bonilha

Luciana Bonilha is a civil engineer, graduated at the School of Engineering of Mackenzie University (1989), Master in Structural Engineering by the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (1997) and post graduate by FIA – Administration Institute Foundation – MBA in Business Management (2010). She has been a professor of the Prestressed Concrete discipline in the School of Engineering of Mackenzie Presbyterian University since 1991. Since having graduated, she’s acted professionally as a structural engineer in industrial, commercial, institutional and residential projects, designing solutions in reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and metallic structures. She’s a partner and the technical director of Statura Engenharia e Projetos Ltda., where she develops projects and construction managing activities, structures’ project development and technical oversight of construction.
